Power Transformer Lubrication Map

A transformer lives or dies by its insulating fluid. Natural and synthetic esters add fire safety and longer insulation life; the cooling fans and fittings need the right grease too.

FAQ

Power Transformer Lubrication Questions

What lubricant should I use on power transformer insulating & cooling fluid?

We recommend FR3® Natural Ester for normal conditions. Natural ester fluids (FR3 from soybean, FR3r from rapeseed) and SE3 synthetic ester insulate and cool with a much higher fire point than mineral oil. Typical interval: Test the fluid yearly (DGA and quality).

What lubricant should I use on power transformer cooling fan bearings?

We recommend HUSKEY™ Coolube Grease for normal conditions, or HUSKEY™ 775 FMG Grease where NSF H1 food-grade is required. Fans run outdoors for years. A water-resistant high-speed grease keeps them turning. Typical interval: Every 6 to 12 months, or per fan maker.

What lubricant should I use on power transformer bushing terminals & connections?

We recommend HUSKEY™ HVS-100 Silicone Grease for normal conditions, or HUSKEY™ HTL-500 Grease where NSF H1 food-grade is required. Dielectric grease keeps moisture and corrosion off outdoor connections. Typical interval: At every outage.

What lubricant should I use on power transformer cover & radiator bolts?

We recommend HUSKEY™ 341 Copper Anti-Seize Compound for normal conditions, or HUSKEY™ FG-1800 Anti-Seize and Thread Sealing Compound where NSF H1 food-grade is required. Outdoor bolts rust in place. Anti-seize keeps covers and radiators serviceable. Typical interval: At every assembly.
