Salt water is relentless. It corrodes steel, washes grease out of bearings and works into every wire rope and fitting. At the same time, marine operators face tightening rules on what lubricants can end up in the water. Marine lubrication has to be tough and responsible at once.
The marine challenge
Deck machinery, winches, cranes, rudder and stern equipment all run wet. Conventional greases wash out, and corrosion starts under the surface. Any lubricant at an oil-to-sea interface also has to meet environmental requirements.

Environmentally acceptable lubricants have improved to the point where many operators use them far beyond the required points. Synthetic waterproof greases, penetrating wire rope dressings and dry-film corrosion protectors extend service life between port calls.

New Lubrication Technologies for Marine
Environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs)
Readily biodegradable, minimally toxic lubricants are standard for oil-to-sea interfaces. The EPA and Coast Guard are moving these requirements from the 2013 Vessel General Permit to national standards under the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA).
Synthetic waterproof greases
Pure synthetic, non-melting greases resist water washout and protect under extreme loads on winches and deck gear.
Penetrating wire rope dressings
Liquid dressings penetrate to the core of wire rope, then set into a tough film that resists water and fling-off.

WIRELINE DRESSING is a heavy duty, tenacious, semi-synthetic penetrating grease fortified with sub-micron size particles of Molybdenum Disulfide (Moly) and Graphite. This high performance liquid grease goes on as a liquid to penetrate to the core of the wire rope. After it penetrates and coats the metal surfaces, the carrier solvent evaporates, leaving behind a tough, durable grease film that protects under the most adverse conditions.

MULTI-METAL CORROSION PROTECTOR 400B is a light amber colored, heavy-duty, biodegradable, dry film corrosion preventative that penetrates into cracks and crevices of metal surfaces. It was originally designed to protect vehicles in transit from corrosion; however, due to its unique additives it can be used to protect a wide range of metal surfaces in many applications. When applied, it leaves behind an excellent corrosion preventative, which does not attract dust and dirt. However, the corrosion preventative can be washed off with standard soap & water, but does not come off in rain. HUSKEY MULTI-METAL CORROSION PROTECTOR 400B is formulated with vegetable oils which makes it an environmentally friendly alternative to mineral oil based products. In addition, it is super compliant per SCAQMD Rule 1144 < 50g/l VOC’s.

What is an environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL)?
A lubricant that is readily biodegradable, minimally toxic and not bioaccumulative. US rules, and a growing number of ports and charterers elsewhere, require EALs at oil-to-sea interfaces on many commercial vessels. Check the current EPA and Coast Guard requirements for your vessel class.
Which of your greases are biodegradable?

What should we use on winch wire rope?
